PROJECT: GOTV
AIGA created the “Get Out The Vote” initiative to help boost civic engagement in the political realm. Through design, we can communicate shed light on a number of things, one of them being the importance of voting.
Goal: Create a non-partisan flyer to sway U.S. citizens to vote in the 2024 U.S. presidential election.
THE DESIGN OUT IN THE WORLD
THE PROCESS
I created mood boards based off of things that have been inspiring me lately in the design world. Three things popped into my head: Blue Note album covers, hardcore flyers and album covers, and modern art based off of simple shapes and patterns.
BLUE NOTE MOOD BOARD
MODERN ART MOOD BOARD
HARDCORE MOOD BOARD
Sketches and Ideas
While I was creating the mood boards, I was sketching alongside them. I would get inspired by pieces I saw, then make a sketch, and repeat that process over and over.
I realized that many of the Blue Note covers typically only had one person on the cover, which could work if the goal wasn’t to make a non-partisan flyer.
I landed on these 3 options, 2 of which were based on hardcore show flyers. I really liked the concept of these and thought it would even be the smart thing to do for the objective of the campaign. The hardcore community is a community that has very strong political stances, but they tend not to vote because it’s all part of the “system”. However, I decided to stray away from it and go with the design that was a bit more universal.
SHAPE THE FUTURE
I ended up going with the last variation of my initial rough draft designs which was the last thing I would have expected going into this project. While I do enjoy simple designs based on shapes and patterns, I didn’t believe I could make something that was interesting and engaging enough to draw people in and keep them there. I was also heavily inspired by the buttons on Sony’s PlayStation controllers since I grew up with it. The shapes on the flyer correspond with the X, square, triangle, and circle buttons.
Within the last 16 years, I’ve noticed that when the election cycle rolls around it is always a very confusing and divisive time period. I wanted to capture that confusion and stress in this flyer.
The intent behind the flyer is to catch the viewer’s eye with the confusion at the top of the flyer, only for them to put the “the puzzle” together and realize by the bottom of the flyer the thing that is important is to vote and voice what matters to them.
I created variations of this poster below as a “night mode” and versions that could be targeted to both democrats and republicans. These variations can be seen below.
